Like many of our clients, Selena and Daryl value the location, walkability and the dynamics of the urban jungle over a two car garage and walk in closets.
Transforming this 1,200ft2, 2 story house, into a home where their family thrives, required every sq inch to add value to their lives. Rather than adding on we developed the existing basement into a vibrant welcoming space which allows this family to live a little more lightly and in harmony with their values.
With two young active boys, just thinking about Ottawa’s winters was a little depressing, this family really needed an elegant mudroom solution without sacrificing a tonne of precious space.
We decided to close off one of the entries to their living room to create a vestibule with privacy. Adding a new powder room makes potty-training so much easier and accommodates their aging parents when they visit.
Their new kitchen is classic in its styling and contemporary in its function. We blew out their back wall and added picture windows and an oversized sliding patio door to bring the outdoors in. A kitchen layout with an island was chosen to create a monolith for the children to chase each other around on those rainy or cold winter days. Built in millwork provided easy storage solutions for their many crafts and other projects.
Their beautiful new basement offers them a wonderful family room where the kids can spread out. It can be portioned off as a guest room when needed, with access to a new full bath and laundry room. We enlarged the windows to bring in more light and carefully laid out the space to ensure it truly met their needs.
We tripled their storage space in the kitchen, both bathrooms and improved the flow of their home, allowing an active four person family to live comfortably in a 1,200ft2 home. By developing their basement they gained another 800ft2 for their family to enjoy.
