Mid Century Modern Renovation in Bells Corners Ottawa

Vision:

This 1980’s split bungalow was originally built with little thought to user experience in the kitchen and living space. Even working alone in the kitchen was challenging and awkward with the tight layout reminiscent of a space ship or something where space is at a premium. This active family of 5 with kids from 10 -16 years old needed a home where the kids can pitch in with making meals and cleaning up, a landing spot for their hockey gear and more connection with their lovely yard. They were feeling cramped and crabby because all the cooking and cleanup was falling on mom, after a long day of teaching because it was worse when anyone helped out in such a tiny and secluded space. The dysfunctional house syndrome was weighing them all down and they figured they needed more space.

Transformation:

We discovered in our concepts studies that we could achieve everything they need with such a small addition of only 2’x12’ where we could recess one wall of the galley kitchen to sit flush with the exterior wall and create a seamless line with the existing mid-century modern fireplace. Adding a great island and some barstools and blowing out the back wall with windows brings the outdoors inside in a brilliant and happy way. Now the family can gather in the kitchen and their home truly has a heart. We also borrowed just enough space from one of the generously sized bedrooms to recess an 8ft closet & barn door into their foyer and integrated a flush tile floor giving them a great landing spot that also provides more visual space in their great room. This truly is a case of less creating so much more!
